Do your Christmas lights trip your breakers?

December 20, 2011

It's that special time of year. Family, friends, parties and Christmas Lights galore. Do you have outdoor Christmas lights? Do your circuit breakers trip when you turn on a hair dryer in your bathroom? This is a very common service call we get here at Grasser Electric. Many people don't realize that the outlets outside your home are often connected to the same GFCI protected circuit that your bathroom outlets are on. So when your Christmas lights are on, they are in some cases using almost the full capicity of a standard 20 Amp circuit. Plug in that hair dryer and POP! There goes the lights, the hair dryer and now a trip to the basement to reset the breaker.
Our St. Charles, MO. based electricians deal with this and other types of circuit problems every day. A solution can be as simple as changing out older incandescent Christmas lights to the new LED lights. These draw considerably less current than the older styles. The BEST way to fix this problem is to add circuits and outdoor outlets on your home to handle the additional loads. Have you considered an outlet in your soffit outside so you don't have to string lengths of extension cords all over the place? We can install outlets just about in any location you wish to make that seasonal decorating a much easier and safer project.
